How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness? When i started my fitness level was almost zero because of a ruptured disc in my back. I could deadlift 95 lbs before the pain was too much. Now – i feel strong and healthy. It’s been a huge blessing and I feel like the sky is the limit. 15. Who or what motivates/inspires you to keep coming back? That sense of accomplishment – every single day. 16. What is your proudest CrossFit achievement? Getting double unders. Even though mine still suck. 17. Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve through CrossFit? Muscle Up. 18. Hobbies/Interests outside of CrossFit? Dating my wife, Spending time with my family, anything involving nature, exploring the mountains on my motorbike, listening to Mac give wedding speeches, wetting my beak with good wine, and traveling, did I mention wedding speeches by Mac? 19. Any additional thoughts/shout-outs/comments: Thank you Matt Love for the encouragement and patience from day one – allowing me only an empty women’s bar for the first several weeks #humbling. You have changed my ability to live life to the fullest and enjoy the things I love – pain free. You were a blessing and now a brother to me. Oh and I wouldn’t get mad if say…more 80’s music showed up at the 4PM.
Our August Female Athlete Spotlight of the month is Janis! Do not be fooled by Janis’s sweet and seemingly shy demeanor, she is a fireball too, and can be found skydiving and swimming with sharks on the weekends! Janis your spirit is amazing, and you seem to positively affect everyone you come into contact with! Your drive to get better every day is something we completely admire about you, and i1uvit would not be the same without you! Thank you for being such an awesome member! 1. Name: Janis Vander Ploeg-Wolfe 2. Age: 33 3. Occupation: Medical Admin 4. Which class time do you usually attend? Mostly 4/4:30, and sometimes noon on Fridays 5. How long have you been CrossFitting? 3(ish) years 6. How did you find CrossFit i1uvit? Through its now closed sister box, Jogo (RIP! I feel very fortunate that I still get to have Erica and sometimes Brad as a coach!) 7. What is your athletic/fitness background (If applicable) Back in high school, I was soooo good at getting injured! I don’t think I ever even had to run a mile because I was always in a cast. My arms got pretty ripped from having to crutch around everywhere, if that counts. 8. Favorite W.O.D. Fran. Just kidding! Cindy or partner DT 9. Favorite lift or movement: Power cleans. When my shoulders bruise from catching the weight (yes, that happens–I bruise easily) I feel so cool. 10. Least favorite W.O.D. Karen. Ugh. 11. Least favorite movement: Wallballs. (I feel like admitting these things is going to lead to Kaylee or Matt programming a triple Karen for character building or something. Does anyone else hear ominous music….?) 12. Favorite life quote: “Study hard what interests you most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible.” -Richard Feynman 13. Favorite “guilty pleasure” food: Mini cupcakes, so I can eat six and tell myself it was only really like eating one. 14. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness? I never thought I’d be capable of doing most of the things I can do now! I’d say the biggest change has been to my courage. I made a promise to myself when I first started Crossfit that if I looked at the WOD in advance on a day I planned to go, I had to go. It’s brought me in on Karen days, running days, and that time we did 100 thrusters as fast as possible (*shudder*). When you regularly make yourself overcome those fears for a workout, it threads into other areas of your life, too. 15. Who or what motivates/inspires you to keep coming back All of the excellent people at i1uvit! Also my mum, Phyllis Wolfe, who introduced me to Crossfit and can kick my butt at most WODS (this isn’t an exaggeration–I just worked out with her when I visited my parents last month. She has the lungs of a blue whale and the strength of an ant). I would love to be as functionally fit as she is when I’m her age. 16. What is your proudest CrossFit achievement? Getting a chest-to-bar pull-up or doing the Open 17. Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve through CrossFit? So many! A bar muscle up would be awesome. I’d also like to be able to do a decent snatch. I keep picturing the weight falling on my head. 18. Hobbies/Interests outside of CrossFit? Mainly reading. And Candy Crush. 19. Any advice for new members? Just show up and do your personal best. 1% better every day! And don’t try to hide at the back of the box, it’s already occupied 20. Any additional thoughts/shout-outs/comments: I’m an introvert; it usually takes a long time for me to feel comfortable. How lucky am I that there are so many people at i1uvit who have quickly made it feel like home?! Thank you to everyone for being so welcoming, and also to those that help hold me accountable. Finally, of course, a HUGE thank you to all of the fantastic coaches at i1uvit, who make each of us feel worthy of the sport and of calling ourselves athletes, no matter where we are in our fitness journey.

How did you find CrossFit i1uvit? When Jogo closed I had to find somewhere new to go and I have friends at i1uvit. I had meant to check it out for a month then move to a gym I knew was about to open, but I enjoyed it so much that I stayed. 7. A true champion works hard and never loses sight of her dreams.” -Dot Richardson 13. Favorite “guilty pleasure” food: Pizza 14. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness? Life: CrossFit helps keep me centered and balanced. It helped me so much when my mother passed away. I think the biggest impact that crossfit has had for me is mental/emotional, but I have gotten stronger and made progress with some movements. I’ve also lost 30 pound in the last year so that’s nice. Lifestyle: Well I certainly talk about crossfit a lot! I also crave healthy food so it makes it easier to make better choices when it comes to nutrition. Level of fitness: I have definitely made some progress. I still can’t do a pull-up but I CAN hang from from a bar for 10 seconds which I was better than the 1 second hang I had when I started. I feel stronger overall. 15. Who or what motivates/inspires you to keep coming back I do. The athlete in my head doesn’t appreciate the body it has to live in. I don’t expect change overnight, but I have this overwhelming feeling that it’s time to become the person I see myself as. Also I would like to be the type of person that is fit enough to win the Hunger Games or survive the zombie apocalypse 😉 16. What is your proudest CrossFit achievement? I don’t know if it’s increasing the time I can hang from the bar or making it through the 2015 Open WODs. 17. Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve through CrossFit? I want to reach my goal body. 18. Hobbies/Interests outside of CrossFit? What are those? I work a lot so crossfit is my hobby, but I suppose I like to read and play xbox too. 19. Any advice for new members? Keep it up! Don’t worry about what the rest of us are doing. Also you can totally do this! I talk to are lot of people that think they can’t, which with that are tribute of course they can’t. 20. Any additional thoughts/shout-outs/comments: Shout out to the Mamacs. It totally makes my day when I get to workout with the. The rest of you are pretty cool too though

The energy encouragement and team feeling that is built when working together to finish your goal is an fantastic way to get better. 9. Favorite lift or movement: power cleans/squat cleans and ring or bar muscle ups. 10. Least favorite W.O.D. I tried it when I was very new to Crossfit… I1uvit 50s and I burned myself out! But I can’t wait for redemption!!! 11. Least favorite movement: Overhead squats and snatch. Gotta really work for those two movements, in time I’m sure I will enjoy them. 12. Favorite life quote: life is ten percent what happens and ninety percent how we react to it. 13. Favorite “guilty pleasure” food: ice cream and pizza 14. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness? Instead of just going through the motions with 2-3 workouts per week Crossfit has awakened my drive to excel in fitness. It has also helped me make better decisions on what to eat and drink, cause I know I will pay for it on my next WOD. 15. Who or what motivates/inspires you to keep coming back The great group of people and coaches we get to workout with each time we go, and the energy and motivation we can all create together. 16.
